How Did I Get Here?

I have something to admit: I don’t have a business degree. However, what I do have is just as valuable, if not more, and it has allowed me to work for a number of companies and with people from various backgrounds — I’m a teacher.

Yesterday’s audio post gave me the idea to write this entry. The path I took to get to where I am now is quite long, so I’ll make this short and simple.

I have earned two degrees in education, taught for five years (k-12, graduate school), and then worked for a few companies in human resources associate, as a community manager and education manager, and organized (my own) monthly events around New York City. I also formed a few companies - some fairly successful, some complete failures.

I joined Mashable in early 2008 as an (east coast) events director. Prior to this I had been organizing one of the largest, tech-focused networking groups/events in New York City. My love for bringing people together, establishing connections, and working with and showcasing companies of all sizes had a very big impact on what I wanted to do (while being nominated and earning a few awards along the way).

Today, I’m still working for Mashable and working upon my own ventures on the side. It’s amazing to see how much the company has grown over the past few years. I remember working from my home or apartment, having numerous conference calls, and sending an instant message to a coworker for an immediate response. Now, we’re (about 20 people) based in a large office in midtown Manhattan (as well as in San Francisco), and I don’t have to walk far for anything. This is a very exciting time for us — We’re growing, announcing new features, and setting up a number of conferences/events/summits around the world!

I still don’t know what tomorrow looks like. My passion for this industry is stronger than ever and I love how it’s always changing, but great things do come to an end. Let’s hope not.
