Is Privacy An Option Anymore (Online)?

We live in a world where we write what’s happening in 140 characters or less, or check-in to a location that (authorized) connections can see. This information allows others to learn about what type of person you are without giving away everything. Or, are you giving away everything after all?

I am a very private person and do not like to share all details about my life. While I am a member of many different web services, most which ask for my full name, work experience(s) and more, I know I am taking a risk. Also, my being employed at Mashable doesn’tt help my cause to remain invisible (in terms of my offline, not professional life).

I have tried many times to conceal things about my life that I wish to not make public (I have nothing to hide; I just wish to not reveal everything). Of course there are many services that crawl/index the web, which I am very well aware of due to my daily Google Alerts. At this point, should I continue to try to keep my offline life private, or should I just give in and accept it as is?
